How Casino Withdrawals Work in Canada
Every casino we review uses the same five steps to process a withdrawal. Knowing those five steps in advance is most of the battle.
1. Verification. Both Kahnawake casino groups require players to present documents proving their identity before any winnings can be paid out. Do this the day you register and you save yourself the wait later on.
2. The request. Made in the cashier, usually back to the method you deposited with; payouts happen through a preferred-method system at the Casino Rewards brands.
3. The pending window. The quiet clause. For a set stretch of time your requested winnings stay reversible, cancellable with one click. At Jackpot City, Spin, Royal Vegas and Ruby Fortune, that window runs a rolling 24 hours. At Zodiac, Casino Classic, Yukon Gold and Grand Mondial it lasts 48 hours. The Baytree terms state, in clause 1.1.20, that the only way to make pending winnings irreversible is to ask customer support to temporarily lock your account.
4. Processing. The casino releases the money. The Baytree four process no withdrawals over weekends, so any request made during that stretch gets processed on Monday.
5. Your bank's clock. On top of the processing time at the casino, Interac, card, bank and crypto transfers each carry their own settlement time.

For anyone chasing the pools on our progressive jackpot pages, that exemption is the most valuable sentence in either document. A Mega Moolah win at a Baytree casino runs into nothing but the GBP 10,000 daily withdrawal ceiling. The same win at a Casino Rewards casino leaves at a maximum of $4,000 a week. The Baytree group also reserves the right to pay winnings in Euros regardless of the currency in your account, while Casino Rewards only converts currency when the payout method does not match the account.
How Fast Casino Withdrawals Actually Pay
Here our data gets thin, because the casinos' does too. Of the nine casinos we review, only one publishes a processing timeframe: Jackpot City commits to 1 to 3 days. The others publish their holds and caps but no processing timeframe, and we never make up timeframes for casinos that decline to publish them. At all of them, once the pending window and the processing are over, Interac and credit card payouts take the usual time to clear through your bank, and crypto payouts move on-chain.
Say you request a Baytree withdrawal on a Wednesday. You wait 24 hours pending, processing happens between Thursday and Friday, and the money should show up in your account by the weekend. Request it on a Friday evening instead and the withdrawal has to wait until the following Monday before processing can start. At the Casino Rewards brands, the 48-hour hold pushes all of that back a day further. Any casino can also take longer than it says. Anyone anxious to cash out should know which clock they are on, and cancel nothing during the pending window.
Casino Winnings Tax in Canada: What the CRA Says
There is a lot of accountancy and guesswork out there on the subject of gambling winnings and tax, so we went to the source. The CRA's page on amounts that are not reported or taxed tells Canadians they do not report "lottery winnings of any amount, unless the prize can be considered income from employment, a business or property, or a prize for achievement". Income Tax Folio S3-F9-C1 says the same thing about gambling wins: they are windfalls, and windfalls are not subject to tax.
The CRA writes two exceptions right beside that. First, gambling carried on as a business is taxed. The courts have found for the CRA where someone gambles with skill, system and regularity for a livelihood, as in the case of the professional pool player the folio itself cites. Winning a jackpot on a slot machine is the opposite of that fact pattern. Second, the money your winnings go on to earn is ordinary income. The CRA's own example: "any interest that you earn when you invest lottery winnings must be reported on your return."
The famous question answers itself. Win $10,000, or $10 million, at a casino as a recreational player and the CRA wants nothing from that win. Talk to an accountant the day that win starts earning interest, and long before anyone could describe your play as a business.

What happens if you win $10,000 at a casino in Canada?
In law, nothing special happens to a recreational player who ends up with a tax-free win: it is a windfall under CRA guidance, with no reporting requirement. The casino's terms, though, do plenty. They will ask for your identification before your first payout, they will hold the win in a pending window of 24 to 48 hours, and the Casino Rewards brands cap weekly payouts at $4,000, so a $10,000 win leaves those brands in instalments. The Baytree brands exempt progressive jackpot wins from their weekly cap.
How long do casino withdrawals take in Canada?
Three clocks decide how long casino winnings take. The pending hold comes first: a rolling 24 hours at the Baytree casinos, with no processing over weekends, and 48 hours at the Casino Rewards casinos. Processing comes second, with Jackpot City the only casino of the nine we review that publishes a timeframe for it, at 1 to 3 days. Your bank or wallet adds the third. Make the request on a Friday at a casino that does not process on weekends and the money realistically reaches your bank the following week.
Do you have to pay tax on gambling winnings in Canada?
Recreational winnings from online casinos are not taxed. The CRA's list of amounts that are not reported or taxed includes lottery and gambling winnings, and its income tax folio treats gambling wins as windfalls unless the gambling is carried on as a business for profit. Two exceptions to that do exist. If the winnings go on to earn interest or investment income, that income is taxable. And anyone who earns their living as a professional gambler pays tax on their gambling income.
Why do casinos ask for ID before paying out?
Both Kahnawake groups have to verify your identity before the first withdrawal, and the licence each group holds requires them to check identity and age. The better policy is to verify before you win. Upload the documents when you open the account and a later withdrawal starts its clocks immediately, with no paperwork left to chase.
Can a casino refuse to pay my winnings?
The terms list the ways it can. Playing 0%-weighted games during bonus wagering lets the casino void those winnings. Any bet above the bonus max bet counts as irregular play, as does any single bet of 30% or more of the bonus. Welcome-bonus winnings can be capped at 6 times the first deposit into the account.
